L ast Thursday morning, Dr Leung held a press conference to quash widespread rumors (rumours in British English) on social media that a woman had been infected with MERS after returning from South Korea. His press conference was shown live on TV. I waited for him to make an English opening statement after his Cantonese statement because everyone is worried about MERS, not just Cantonese-speakers. But he did not make an English statement like Hui Sir used to do. I was stunned (shocked, astonished). He only gave brief answers to questions by English-language reporters towards the end of the press conference. To quash a rumor means to put an end to it. The expression social media means internet sites and applications such as Facebook that let people share videos, pictures and other things.
Shortly after Dr Leung's press conference, Lee Wai-king and other DAB members also met with reporters to talk about political reforms. After answering several questions in Cantonese, a reporter asked her a question in English. She gave the reporter the cold shoulder. This means she ignored the reporter and showed no interest. She continued answering questions in Cantonese and even answered a question in Putonghua. She answered one or two English questions only when no other reporters had any more questions. I would like to remind Lee Wai-king that Hong Kong's official languages are the Cantonese dialect and English, not Cantonese and Putonghua.

上周四早上，梁醫生召開記者會，平息（quash）社交媒體（social media）上所散佈，有關一名女子到訪南韓返港後感染新沙士的謠言。他的記者會有電視台現場直播。他以廣東話講說後，我正等待他作一個英語的公開聲明，因為每一個人——不單是操廣東話的人——都對新沙士憂心忡忡。他卻沒有像許Sir一樣，發表英語聲明。我感到很吃驚（stunned）。他只是在記者會尾聲，粗略解答一些英語記者的提問。To quash a rumor就是終止謠言。習語 social media就是諸如面書的社交網站和應用程式，讓人們在上面分享短片、圖像及其他事情。
梁醫生舉行記者會沒多久，李慧琼和其他民建聯成員也就政改討論會見記者。她以廣東話回答幾個問題後，一位記者以英語向她提問。她卻冷淡對待（the cold shoulder），忽視那名記者，顯得毫不關心。她續以廣東話答問題，甚至以普通話回答其中一條問題。當沒有其他記者進一步提問時，她才回答一至兩條英語問題。我得提醒李慧琼，香港的法定語文是廣東話與英語，而非廣東話與普通話。mickchug@gmail.com
