Political slogans, if they are catchy enough, can easily influence public opinion. Barack Obama's very catchy "Yes we can" slogan influenced public opinion so much that he won the 2008 US presidential election. He told voters he would bring change to America, which was being hurt by two expensive wars in the Middle East and a financial crisis. His catchy slogan "Yes we can" told voters they had the power to change things. Ronald Reagan's very catchy "It's morning again in America" slogan also helped him win the 1980 US presidential election. The slogan told voters that America was making a fresh start.

catchy slogan is a slogan that catches the attention of people and is easy to remember. Obama's "Yes we can" slogan was easy to remember and caught the interest of voters. In 2010, the previous chief executive, Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, used the slogan "Anchors aweigh" (起錨 in Chinese) to convince people that pan-democrats in the Legislative Council should vote for political reforms so Hong Kong could start a new journey. The slogan was easy to remember but I felt at the time that it was not catchy enough because "Anchors aweigh" made me think of ships rather than political change.

        The government now has a new slogan to convince people that Legco should pass the central government's political reform framework for Hong Kong. The slogan is "Make it happen". It is a catchy slogan that tells people to make sure Legco votes for the reform framework. But I think the Chinese version of the slogan is much catchier. It roughly translates into "2017, must make sure it happens". The first half of the slogan rhymes with the second half and easily catches the attention of the people. But I don't think it is very original because it is similar to Obama's "Yes we can" slogan. The pan-democrats have said they will vote down the reform framework because it is not true democracy. They need a catchier slogan than "Make it happen". I suggest "Make it go away" to tell people they want the reform framework to disappear.

        若政治口號夠醒目易記(catchy),就能輕易影響民意。奧巴馬那個相當醒目易記(catchy)的口號"Yes we can",對民意的影響大得令他在2008年美國總統選舉中取勝。他跟選民說他會為美國帶來改變,當時美國正受害於中東兩場開支龐大的戰役與財務危機。他那醒目易記(catchy)的口號"Yes we can"正正告訴選民,他們有能力改變事情。朗奴列根那非常易記(catchy)的口號"It's morning again in America",同樣幫助他在一九八○年的美國總統選舉中獲勝。口號讓選民知道,美國正重新開始。

        A catchy slogan就是一個引人注意又易記的口號。奧巴馬的口號"Yes we can"很易記,亦能引起選民興趣。二○一○年前任特首曾蔭權,亦用上口號「起錨」游說眾人,立法會的泛民派應投票通過政改,好讓香港開展新的一程。口號確實易記,但我當時認為它還是不夠醒目(catchy),因為「起錨」令我聯想到船隻多於政改。

        政府現在有個新口號游說公眾,立法會應該通過中央政府給予香港的政改框架。口號是"Make it happen"。它是個醒目易記(catchy)的口號,叫人確定立法會應投票通過政改框架。但我認為口號的中文版更引人注意(catchier),就是「2017,一定要得」。口號的前半與後半押韻,容易引起公眾關注。但我不認它很原創新穎,因為它類近奧巴馬的口號"Yes we can"。泛民說他們將否決政改框架,因為它不是真正的民主。他們需要一個比"Make it happen"更醒目易記(catchier)的口號。我建議用"Make it go away"去跟人說,他們希望政改框架就此消失。mickchug@gmail.com
