T he word “party” is normally used as a noun but nowadays it is commonly used as a verb too. When used as a verb, it means to go out and have a good time. The word “wee” means small or little. The expression “wee hours” or “small hours” means the early hours of the morning, from midnight to around 5am. People who paint the town red usually party till the wee hours of the morning. The word split means to break something into halves or two parts. If you have a splitting headache, it means you have such a painful headache that it feels like your head is splitting open. Stress from too much work often gives me a splitting headache.
Last New Year’s Eve I said in a column that I always make New Year’s resolutions. A New Year’s resolution is a promise that you make to yourself at the start of a new year to stop your bad habits or do things that are good. Last year I promised myself not to get angry so easily, but I got angry many times during 2014. My New Year’s resolution for 2015 is again not to get angry so easily. The Occupy Central protest has made many Hong Kong people angry with their friends and even their families. I hope you will all make a New Year’s resolution not to quarrel anymore about Occupy Central.

Party通常用作名詞，但今天它也常用作動詞。作動詞用時，則解作出外盡歡。 Wee這個字解作細小、少許。習語“wee hours”或“small hours”是指凌晨時份，大約午夜至清晨五時。狂歡作樂（paint the town red）的人通常會盡興（party）至凌晨時分（wee hours）。 Split是指將東西分成兩半，若你有 splitting headache，即是你頭痛得像頭顱被劏開（splitting）一樣。過多工作的壓力也不時令我頭痛欲裂（splitting headache）。
上年除夕，我在專欄中寫道，我總是會有新年立志（New Year's resolutions）。 A New Year's resolution 就是你在新年之始向自己立志，戒掉一些壞習慣又或做些甚麼好事。上年我就許諾自己，不那麼輕易發怒，但我在2014年間卻動怒過不少次。我2015年的新年宏願（New Year's resolution），仍是不輕易動怒。佔中示威令許多香港人向他們的朋友甚至家人動怒。我希望你們人人也立下新年志願（New Year's resolution），不再因佔中而爭吵。mickchug@gmail.com
